Zanga, born illegitimately, returns to Sekoro, the native village from which he'd been chased, to find his father. His arrival coincides with the uprupt upheavals in the river's flow credited to Faro, the river spirit. These events are interpreted as a sign of anger linked to Zanga's lowly status.
