Akal, a project by Moroccan director Basma Rkioui, received a Unifrance Doc Award during the 68th DOK Leipzig, a festival dedicated to animation and documentary film, which takes place in Germany from October 27 to November 2.
This project is produced in Morocco by Karim Debbagh and Basma Rkioui (Kasbah Films), and co-produced in France by Charlotte Guénin (Massala).Malin Hüber & Tijana Djukic
As a reminder, these awards, initiated by Unifrance and supported by TitraFilm, recognize a documentary project in development presented in the form of a pitch or WIP at major documentary film festivals. Three awards are presented each year.
Thanks to this award, Akal will receive subtitling assistance from TitraFilm. Its French producer Charlotte Guénin (Massala) will be offered a one-year membership to Unifrance (within the feature film producers' college).
The jury, composed of Malin Hüber, producer (HER Film), Tijana Djukic, head of sales and acquisitions (Stranger Films Sales), and Vera Herchenbach, head of acquisitions (Madman Entertainment), declared: "At a time of political extremes and wars, the climate crisis is becoming a sideshow (when it should remain the focus). This story has a family‘s story at its centre and opens up the audience's attention to a universal tale of forever altered landscapes and a vanishing way of life."
