On October 17, the Academy revealed the list of films selected for the longlist vying for the Oscar 2020 for Best Animated Feature. A spectacular record of seven French films feature on this prestigious list.
Last year, only one film, a French coproduction (Mutafukaz) featured on this list, made up of 25 titles. This year, not only is the list extended to 32 titles, a record, but the presence of 7 majority French films makes another record.
The French or majority French films selected:
- Dilili in Paris by Michel Ocelot (Nord-Ouest Films)
- Funan by Denis Do (Les Films d'Ici)
- I Lost My Body by Jérémy Clapin (Xilam Animation)
- Marona's Fantastic Tale by Anca Damian (Sacrebleu Productions)
- Pachamama by Juan Antin (Folivari, O2B Films)
- The Swallows of Kabul by Zabou Breitman and Éléa Gobbé-Mévellec (Les Armateurs)
- The Tower by Mats Grorud (Les Contes Modernes)
We should also note the nomination of Ce magnifique gâteau ! by Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels, a minority French coproduction for Vivement Lundi !, with Belgium and The Netherlands.
The final nominations will be announced on January 13, 2020. In the past, it should be noted that 6 French films made the shortlist, without however winning the Oscar: Belleville Rendez-vous, Ernest & Celestine, Persépolis, The Illusionist, A Cat in Paris, and My Life as a Courgette.
