In July, French films accrued 3.67 million admissions abroad (€18 million in box office revenues) and majority French productions participated at a level of 94% in the monthly result (3.45 million tickets sold and €17.1 million at the box office). In relation to the previous month, admissions outside France increased by 9% and the global score was 45% higher than that of July 2018 (2.52 million spectators). 5 films attracted more than 100,000 spectators, up by 2 on the month of June, and the top 3 titles garnered a total of 2.17 admissions, compared to June's 1.78 million, which equaled the monthly score achieved by Anna alone. Serial Bad Weddings 2 re-entered the top 3 and The Emperor of Paris joined it for the first time, while Anna, invincible, held on to the number 1 spot on the chart. It should be noted that the markets of Central and Eastern Europe (especially those of Russia, Poland, and Ukraine) generated more than half the monthy admissions of French titles.
Anna remains the most-seen French film in foreign markets. In July, the thriller achieved its best release to date in Russia, where it launched in 2nd place at the local box office, with 544,000 tickets sold in 1,335 theaters. A month after it released, the film, still ranking in the Russian top 10, had sold over more than 900,000 tickets (€3.14 million in box office revenues), thereby making Russia the territory where the title boasted the best results in its international career so far, ahead of the USA (850,000 spectators and $7.74 million) and even France (705,000 admissions). Anna has also made a place for itself on the Ukrainian market, where it has garnered 138,000 admissions (€478,000). To date, Anna has appealed to 3.42 million foreign moviegoers (€18 million in box office revenues) in fifty territories, and Latin America, Australia, Spain, Italy, and Japan are waiting in the wings.
Thanks in part to its release in Greece and Poland, Serial Bad Weddings 2, the leader of the April and May 2019 charts, re-entered the top 3. In Poland, the comedy released on 150 screens and achieved a result in keeping with that of Serial Bad Weddings (2014 – 242,500 admissions and a total of €1.06 million). At the end of its second weekend, the film had already crossed the 100,000 spectator threshold. Further south, Serial Bad Weddings 2 took over the local chart the week of its release and, three weeks later, it was still among the films the most seen by Greek moviegoers, with a provisional total of 80,000 tickets sold (€530,000). Philippe de Chauveron's sequel, which has already attracted 2.87 million spectators beyond France's borders (€22.1 million), will soon arrive in Spain and Israel.
As was the case in June, the top 3 podium was completed by a new arrival. Distributed on a vast scale in 825 Russian theaters, The Emperor of Paris rose to 3rd place in the local chart and established itself as the title uniting the highest number of film fans (more than 120,000) among the week's new releases. At the same date, the latest film by Jean-François Richet attempted to find its audiences in Spain (15,000 admissions) and Ukraine (10,000 admissions). Already released in 25 foreign territories, The Emperor of Paris will be in Colombian and Portuguese theaters in the coming months.
Outside the top 3, two comedies drew in more than 100,000 spectators in foreign territories. Ibiza attracted 56,500 Russians, 27,000 Belgians, and 23,000 Ukrainians, while How to be a French Lover brought together 78,500 Russians and 43,500 Ukrainians.
