Synopsis
Aviators, pioneers of an age-old dream, were the authentic heroes of World War 1. Unique, almost mystic, they were the last knights of a civilization definitively overwhelmed by mass production and the triumph of technology. Our protagonist is a young man of a wealthy family, intellectually gifed but socially proscribed by ill health. Ostensibly cured of consumption after treatment at a montain sanatorium, he comes home only to realize that he remains an outcast. Of cours, there is the hand-me-down position of deputy director in the family business, but titles and power cannot fulfill his deepest yearnings. August 1914 : Europe marches off to war. But Henry is declared unfit for service. He volunteers, only to be agained turned down. But Henry cannot accept the idea of serving his country from behind a desk in the family textile plant. But if he were to fly ! Fighting the war in the air wouldn't make him a health risk to his compatriots. The army is in need of pilots. They wouldn't turn down a fully-trained pilot ready to serve for the duration of hostilities...
