Synopsis
In the heart of the Alps, in the canton of Valais, glaciers are melting at an accelerating rate. Since 2001, Switzerland's 1,400 glaciers have lost a third of their volume. One of the most iconic, the Aletsch Glacier, could disappear by 2100: a diagnosis that applies to all of the Alpine giants. The melting of glaciers and permafrost also raises the question of water resources and their distribution in the long term. In the high mountains, repeated droughts are already affecting alpine pastures and their biodiversity, while fires are becoming increasingly difficult to control. The magazine also takes us to India, to the foothills of the Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand, where 240 million people are directly threatened by climate change, melting glaciers, extreme weather events, and landslides. For these Indians, global warming is already a matter of survival.
