Synopsis
Between 1947 and 1950, more than 80,000 Greek citizens were interned on the island of Makronissos in re-education camps aimed at fighting "against the expansion of communism." May writers and poets were among the deported, including Yannis Ritsos and Tassos Livaditis.
Despite deprivation and torture, these exiled people managed to write poems describing their survival in this concentration camp world. These texts, some of which were buriend in bottles in the camp grounds, have been rediscovered.
Comme des lions de pierre à l’entrée de la nuit combines these poetic writings with the re-education texts that were constantly broadcast through the camp loudspeakers. Long dolly shots, like hypnotic movements, wander through the camp ruins and "collide" with archive photos.
An essay film that brings alive the memory of forgotten ruins and a lost battle.
