In the year of our Lord 1122, Louis VI, King of France, promoted Sir Godefroy de Papincourt to the rank of Count of Montmirail, for having saved the king's life during an ambush. The new count was also awarded the hand of Frénégonde de Pouille. As he was leaving the battlefield to meet his betrothed, he encountered a dreaded witch, whom he arrested. In revenge, she threw a spell on the count, inducing him to kill his fiancée's father with his crossbow. In desperation, the count seeks out the sorcerer Eusabius, who suggests that the unfortunate man travel in time to undo his mistake. Both the count and his squire, Jacquouille La Fripouille, drink a magic potion. Eusabius, unfortunately, got the dosage wrong, and the two knights find themselves in the year 1992. They therefore confront the most terrible of trials: surviving in an era where everything is incomprehensible to them. They attempt to communicate in archaic language, and try to get back home by all possible means. They decide to locate Montmirail Castle, the only familiar object in the distressingly altered landscape...
