Released the same day as "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," "The Closet" has created a stir in the United Kingdom, jumping straight to 10th place at the box office in its first weekend in theaters.
After more than 3 weeks on the screens, the film can pride itself on having already achieved the second best results for a French film across the Channel since the start of the year, boasting £304,950 in receipts (46,915 admissions) with 21 prints in circulation.
Blazing a trail of success, "The Closet" was followed by the release of "Read My Lips" one week later, which has also kicked off its career nicely. With 13 prints distributed, the film by Jacques Audiard has raked in £183,692 (28,260 admissions) after 3 weeks on the screens, immediately taking out 4th place among the top-performing French films of 2002. The record to break is held by "Just Visiting" and its £725,021 (119,170 admissions) score, which was helped along by the fact that the film was shot in English and the large number of prints released on the English market (320).
We are now eagerly awaiting initial results for "Betty Fisher" (released on June 14), which has been highly acclaimed by the press.
