More than five million spectators worldwide for Ladybug & Cat Noir Awakening, and the million mark for Jeanne du Barry: two new successes for French cinema worldwide.
After attracting more than one million fans to theaters in the first two weeks of its international release, Ladybug & Cat Noir Awakening achieved a feat that no French film has achieved since 2017: over five million foreign moviegoers! It becomes the third most-viewed majority-financed French animated film in foreign cinemas in the last 25 years, behind The Little Prince (2015, 18.4 million and €80.5 million in box office revenues) and Arthur and the Invisibles (2006, 10.2 million and €49.8 million). The big-screen adaptation of the hit saga has won over, among others, 2.26 million Russians (Exponenta, €5.8 million), 1.14 million Germans (StudioCanal, €8.86 million, eight weeks in the local top 10), 745,000 Poles (Kino Swiat, €3.3 million), 445,000 Chinese (China Film, €1.73 million), 149,000 moviegoers in Belgium & Luxembourg (Belga, €1.35 million), and 135,000 Austrians (Constantin, €1.17 million). Recently released in Cyprus and Greece (Tanweer), Ladybug & Car Noir Awakening will soon be released in Lithuania (Acme) and Turkey (The Moments Entertainment), while it has been available on Netflix in the USA, Latin America, Oceania, and many countries in Asia and Western Europe since the end of July.
The other title to cross the million-admissions mark is Jeanne du Barry : the historical film has become Maïwenn's biggest international box-office success, well ahead of Mon roi (2015, 526,000 admissions and €2.78 million at the box office) and Poliss (2011, 180,000 and €1.32 million). Although 904,000 foreign viewers who discovered the biopic on the big screen were Russians (Russian World Vision, €3.51 million), Jeanne du Barry can count on encouraging releases to make its mark internationally. By the end of August, the film had attracted 63,000 Italiens (Medusa/Notorious, €0.41 million), 46,000 Poles (Gutek, 0,2 M€), 17 000 €0.2 million), 17,000 Germans (Wild Bunch, €0.16 million), and 6,500 Austrians (Panda, €0.06 million), not to mention 28,000 tickets sold in Belgium & Luxembourg (Paradiso, €0.24 million), and 19,000 in Switzerland (Frenetic, 0,3 M€). Jeanne du Barry will soon be playing in Spain (Notorious), Estonia (GPI), and The Netherlands (Paradiso).
Since the start of the year, six French productions have attracted over one million international moviegoers: Ladybug & Car Noir Awakening leads the way (5.14 million admissions and €24.5 million in ticket sales, 12 territories), followed by the sensational performers in the first six months of the year Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (2.69 million / €17.9 million / 39) and The Three Musketeers - D'Artagnan (1.57 million / €8.62 million / 46). These top three are followed by Argonuts (1.32 million / €8.0 million / 29), Jeanne du Barry (1.02 million / €4.44 million / 8) and the minority-French production Triangle of Sadness (3.58 million / €30.6 million / 60 / in total 2022+2023). A special mention goes to King, which passed the million-admission mark a year and a half after its launch in France, buoyed by successful new releases (1.01 million / €3.18 million / 45 / in total 2022+2023).
