In January, an animated feature stood out on the European markets, an adventure film was a smash hit in Italy and Colombia, while a comedy appealed to Spanish audiences.

January was a fine month for French productions abroad. Across the five continents, French films accumulated 4.34 million admissions (€24.5 in box office revenues) and showed a 29.6% increase compared with December 2018. Moreover, this score was significantly higher than that recorded in January 2018 (+9.1%). Astérix: The Secret of the Magic Potion and Mia and the White Lion led the dance, but we shouldn't neglect to mention 3 other titles that crossed the 100,000 spectator threshold during the month.
Astérix: The Secret of the Magic Potion remained in the lead with 1.28 million admissions in 23 territories (€5.75 in box office revenues)! The animated feature had already attracted 310,000 spectators in Russia (€892,500), 243,500 in Spain (€1.44 million), and 225,500 in Poland (€968,000). It rose to the top of the monthly ratings in Greece and Portugal - and was among the top 3 in Poland and Ukraine – during its opening week. All these releases and continued runs are stronger than those of Asterix - The Mansion of the Gods, which, between 2014 and 2015, drew in more than 3 million spectators. Asterix's latest adventures will soon be out on Italian, Quebec and Turkish screens.
For its first appearance in the monthly ratings, Mia and the White Lion settled in 2nd position. In Italy, thanks to a highly successful launch, the number of screens increased from 374 to 542 in its 2nd week. The film tallied 653,500 spectators (€4.12 million) and remains in 2nd place in the local listings. In only 2 weeks, it became the 8th most successful French film in Italy in the past 10 years! Mia and the White Lion has also met with sensational success in Colombia: audiences have flocked and, with 249,500 tickets sold in 94 movie theaters (€587,000), the film has already overtaken Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (226,000 spectators in 2017). In early February, the adventure film has continued its international career in Germany, Austria, and Poland.
Sink or Swim rounds out the top 3 titles. The comedy benefited from his Spanish release mid-January, where it launched in 230 theaters, to add 157,000 admissions (€959,000) to its results and to cross the threshold of 500,000 tickets sold outside France (576,500 and €3,88 million in total). The film's Spanish performance is very similar to that in Italy (160,000 spectators and €1.07 million), but the Italian release involved 43 less screens. Already out in twenty territories, Sink or Swim will soon be releasing in Israel and The Netherlands.
Apart from the top 3, other titles have been enjoying fine local careers. Rolling to You has garnered 259,500 admissions in Spain (€1.63 million) and 42,500 in Colombia (€128,500), Ailo's Journey and Non-Fiction have both sold 100,000 tickets respectively in Finland (€1.08 million) and Italy (€629,000), and Taxi 5 appealed to 115,500 Japanese spectators (€1.22 million).
