Synopsis
Justine is in her room, in her bed. Her alarm goes off and it takes a long time for her to turn the sound off. She goes back to sleep. My Sister’s Room takes place in Justine’s bedroom. The camera almost never leaves these four walls. And neither does she.
The space feels suffocating at times, and familiar and safe at others. This is where Justine scrolls, laughs with friends, avoids school, discusses dating habits and cries when opening up about her state of mind. Subtle shifts, like getting dressed, or cleaning her bedroom window, signal that she could be having a better day.
This intimate and sober portrait is made by Justine’s sister. Their bond allows us to observe her during vulnerable times without it ever feeling voyeuristic. We see her through a patient and loving lens, revealing bits and pieces of her inner world. The director skillfully relies on subtleties, and seems never to feel pressure to zoom in on her sister’s insecurities or dramatize her emotions. A raw and authentic film that deals with urgent issues like depression, anxiety and sexual boundaries.
