Synopsis
The Kanun, Ottoman customary law, is still adhered to by certain Albanian clans. Among the rules laid down by this social code, is Gjakmarrja, or «blood-taking» which advocates that if a murder is committed, the family of the dead person has the right to revenge the death by killing any one man in the perpetrator’s family. But blood cannot be shed inside the home. Only outside. Living a life of self-imposed seclusion is sometimes the only way to stay safe.
