Private archives are the departure point for Péter Forgács to set out on the traces of two people at the time of the Spanish Civil War: a student from Madrid who survived the conflict and a Catalonian industrialist killed a few days into the fighting. Although their two paths went in opposite directions, their personal images mingle to revive the atmosphere of Spain during the thirties and forties. A poetic assemblage of amateur films and quotes from men and women who participated in the civil war, this intensely personal documentary tries to retranscribe the context in which this war took place. It’s a film where the personal meets up with greater history. “For decades, the representation of the Spanish Civil War boiled down to Robert Capa’s black and white photos. It was always (…) the simplified vision of a struggle between good and evil – far distant, for me, from the real Spain.” – Péter Forgács
