Marc and Lisa have nothing in common except a pair of mutual friends, a gay couple named Alex and Victor. Victor takes his old pal Marc in when he needs a place to stay, but Alex is maniacally houseproud and Marc is just too untidy. Together they hatch a plan to pass Marc off as gay and have him move in with Lisa. In no time at all, our roughneck reporter is dolled up as a dithering queen. False impressions and misconceptions follow thick and fast, but the fun really starts when Marc falls genuinely in love with Lisa, and she with him...

About
The basic storyline — an inveterate macho having to pretend to be homosexual in order to house-share with a very attractive executive woman recovering from a messy divorce — could have resulted in a somewhat trivial light comedy. We chose to adopt exactly the opposite approach and take a clear-eyed, sympathetic look at the relationships that develop between a man and a woman when the codes of seduction are (temporarily) lifted. We opted to make a comedy film that is, we hope, often funny but also affectionate. I have no qualms at all about labelling “What I Did For Love” a “romantic comedy”. (Jérôme Cornuau - excerpt from press-kit)
