Since this event was launched by Unifrance and French Embassy in 1997, the number of spectators to French films in Hungary has increased almost fivefold, rising from 170,000 admissions to 800,000 admissions today.
1999 and 2000 were pivotal years for French films in Hungary, with the success of "Taxi," "Asterix and Obelix versus Caesar," then "Taxi 2," "Amelie" and "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra." 2003 saw the resounding triumph of "Taxi 3" and "The Pianist."
2004 is also bright with promise, with 8 French films already released on Hungarian screens in the first quarter of the year, and more than 40 other titles awaiting release. Hungary registers the highest movie attendance figures of all territories in the region (with an average of 1.5 visits per person in 2002) and, of all incoming members of the European Union, releases the greatest number of French films. 39 French films, including 28 French-language productions were distributed in the country in 2003, surpassed in the region only by Russia. In addition to this, the number of prints of new films in circulation is constantly rising (250 in 2003 against 198 in 2002), which bears witness to the widespread presence of French films across the territory.
It is for this reason that Unifrance, with the participation of Citroen-Hungary and the French and Hungarian state authorities, is hosting the 8th Budapest French Film Festival this year, to be held April 22 through 24. As in previous years, the films to be showcased at this event have been selected in collaboration with Hungarian distributors.
8 films will thus be presented at the historic Corvin cinema complex’s largest theater (500 seats), located in the city center. For each of these films and their distributors, the festival will serve as a launching platform for their promotion in the lead-up to their commercial release.
