Three important events in March will give Argentinean audiences the chance to discover the diversity of current French film production.
Laurent Cantet will be in Buenos Aires from March 12 through 14 to promote Entre les murs (The Class) prior to its launch on March 26. Primer Plano will release the film on 18 prints.
Cantet will take advantage of his trip to South America to take part in the Pinamar Film Festival, organized by Greentara Producciones, at which this year’s line-up features a dozen French productions, with styles ranging from La Personne aux deux personnes (Me Two, also released as The Person Who is Two Persons) to Les Citronniers (The Lemon Tree).
From March19 through 25, Unifrance and the French Embassy in Argentine will be hosting the 2009 Cine Frances event, presenting preview screenings of twelve French films: Actrices (Actresses), Belle toujours, Enfin veuve (A Widow at Last), Entre les murs (The Class), Faubourg 36 (Paris 36), La Faute à Fidel (Blame it on Fidel!), L'Invité (The Dinner Guest), Jardins en automne (Gardens in Autumn), Rumba, Le Silence de Lorna (Lorna’s Silence), Les Témoins (The Witnesses), and Une vie à t'attendre (I've Been Waiting So Long).
This exceptional exposure for French films will continue the following week, with around thirty French productions to be screened at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI), which also features three retrospectives dedicated to French filmmakers: Michel Ocelot, Jean Eustache, and to Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet.
French films have shown strong appeal to Argentinean audiences in recent years, with an average of 1.1 million admissions registered annually.
In 2008, 37 French titles hit Argentinean screens. Three of these achieved outstanding results: Two Days in Paris (100,000 admissions), La Fille coupée en deux (The Girl Cut in Two, 67,000 admissions), Dialogue avec mon jardinier (Conversations with my Gardener, 64,000 admissions).
