Synopsis
Colombia is home to over 10% of the world's terrestrial flora and fauna, a unique biodiversity that thrives within a wide range of ecosystems. This exceptional richness makes Colombia the second most megadiverse country in the world. But when it comes to birds, it takes the top spot.
With around 2,000 different bird species representing 20% of the world’s avifauna, 84 of which are endemic, Colombia has rightfully earned the title of the “Land of Birds.”
In June 2023, the country launched a comprehensive national strategy that combines bird conservation with economic development opportunities. This ambitious program, aimed at building a sustainable economy, is betting on a form of bird-centered ecotourism: Birdwatching (also known as avitourism or bird observation).
