Synopsis
The Tollund Man, a natural mummy preserved in a Danish bog for over 2,500 years, offers a rare opportunity to come face to face with the past. Contemplating this sleeping face, one imagines where he came from, who he was, how he lived, and above all: why did he die? What was he doing here, in the peat, with a noose around his neck? Since his discovery in 1950, scientists have been trying to solve this mystery, which has turned out to be a ‘cold case’. This is all the more true given that the mummy found is not an isolated case: hundreds of bodies have been recovered from the peat bogs of north-western Europe, most of them having died violent deaths.
