Synopsis
A feat of engineering, a bold undertaking by master builders, and a spiritual ambition, Mont Saint-Michel has held an incredible fascination for centuries. Neither truly on land nor entirely in the sea, its silhouette rises above a rock just under 1 km in circumference, in the middle of the bay that bears its name. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it welcomes an average of 2.5 million tourists each year. With peak visitor numbers reaching 25,000 per day, it is one of the most visited sites in France. Its exceptional location and 13 centuries of history make Mont Saint-Michel a unique monument, known throughout the world. To build it, the builders had to overcome countless challenges. They innovated, defied the laws of balance, and intertwined structures on top of each other to erect this colossus of the seas. How did the builders manage to erect this stone giant on top of a rock? What techniques enabled them to suspend it above the void? How did it withstand harsh weather conditions and historical upheavals, given that its strategic location has always made it a key military asset?
