Synopsis
Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, soil salinization due to rising sea levels: the Senegal River delta is facing the consequences of global warming. With its fertile land, this Sahel-Saharan territory has historically been known as the country's breadbasket. But now, ecosystems weakened by human activity are less resilient, tides are rendering the land uncultivable, and storms and currents are exacerbating erosion. Water levels are also rising, threatening Saint-Louis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and washing away villages. Thousands of inhabitants are being forced to flee: they are Africa's first climate refugees. Faced with this situation, solutions do exist. Scientists, park rangers, farmers, fishermen, and villagers are thinking, experimenting with new techniques, adapting, and sometimes returning to traditional knowledge in order to preserve the delta's ecosystems and biodiversity.
