Synopsis
In the middle of the eighteenth century, the Jesuit Jean-Denis Attiret is one of the official painters of the Chinese Imperial Court. He is given the honorable task of painting the portrait of Empress Ulanara. This concubine, who had become the empress after the death of the Emperor Qing Long's first wife, will have a very special fate. She was an early romantic figure.
All that remains of her is this portrait, embued with mysterious sensuality, of an Asian Mona Lisa. The film recounts this feverish moment when the Chinese empress encounters the Jesuit painter. A moment when the highly-charged relationship between a painter and his model are caught in the vise of the constraints of the court (and its rigid etiquette) and the most extreme cultural differences.
