Irène Mélikoff, French Orientalist of Russian origin, dedicated her life to the study of the Alévi-Bektachi movement (a shape of popular heterodox Islam) of Turkey. Thanks to her activity and her works, Alévis (between ten and fifteen millions according to various sources) became aware of the religious and cultural importance of their community.
