Synopsis
Bosnia, 1997. Four young women, two old women, four girls, an elderly man and a young boy live in Slavno, a village decimated by war. Their families have been killed and the bodies of the dead never found. Living with the presence of their dead has meant that the women have created a world peculiar to them where that which isn’t there is well and truly there. While trying to live, all the time keeping their memories and dreams intact, they’ve made their village into an ideal country, without even realizing it. Slavno is faraway from the rest of the world, but the first snowfalls risk isolating it entirely. Alma, a determined thirty-year-old, is convinced that it’s possible to make the village more prosperous by selling plum jam and bottled fruit and vegetables by the side of the road. One day, two businessmen arrive on a surprise visit and offer the village inhabitants large sums of money if they’ll sell their property and leave Slavno.
