Synopsis
The filmmaker Sylvaine Dampierre is originally from Guadaloupe, but has always lived in France. She therefore sets out to discover her roots and her personal history. During this journey of initiation, involving encounters and her father's tales, she hopes to find, through gaining knowledge about the island and its tragic history of slavery, the origins of her surname. The narrative, enriched with intense sensorial, visual, and emotional moments, gives voice to various stories: that of the filmmaker's father who wanted to go to France right from early on, that of Rogers dealing with genealogical issues, or that of Lena Blue, a choreographer. All try to decipher contemporary traces of slavery, or indeed colonialism in general, and the film takes the pulse of a new generation searching to reappropriate its culture.
