East of Me
Synopsis
Today, a young woman crosses the former Eastern bloc countries by train, heading for Moscow, this Moscow that haunts her and without which she never would have left her country, when the tanks were still there and freedom was elsewhere, in the West... She speaks with the people she encounters, at railway stations and in the snow-decked countryside. Fragments of her past rise to the surface... At the beginning of the 1980s, Marta leaves Prague for Paris. The eighties were those heady years of nightclubbing, taking drugs, being willing to do anything to earn a bit of money, striptease, men passing through. In the new East, everyone also talks about getting away, particularly the girls. But Marta is no longer here: Those who left at another time no longer have a place in this new East.
