Synopsis
How Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, a work celebrating universal brotherhood, has been hi-jacked by the powerful and despotic of this world.
Written between 1817 and 1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is regarded as the great German composer’s musical will and testament. But, above all, it champions the most generous of utopias, that of a human brotherhood to come. Associated with the ideal of beauty and inspired by Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” claiming that all men are brothers, this rallying work announced a new golden age and left its indelible imprint on the Western musical canon. Nevertheless, the work has been hi-jacked by powerful people of this world, including despots. How is it that music with such universalist aims has been perverted in this way?
