Synopsis
Victor Lanoux plays Bertin, a scheming husband, whose future plans include the murder of his wealthy wife. With the money he will inherit, Bertin plans to start a new life with his mistress Muriel (Valerie Mairesse), who is carrying his child. The film is pure Emile Zola material, featuring small, provincial people with big-time ideas which ultimately lead nowhere. For a while, though it looks as though the couple will get away with murder; their tiny community closes ranks and refuses to cooperate with the authrorities. The motivations behind this conspiracy of silence are often repellant, but altogether understandable.
