During the 1887 Universal Exposition in Barcelona, young Onofre Bouvila leaves his peasant's life behind to seek his fortune in the "city of wonders." He is initially drawn to the anarchist workers' movement, which he steadily abandons in order to get ahead. In a matter of years, eliminates his enemies one by one and becomes an all-powerful mafioso figure who controls Barcelona.
