In the village of Nazareth, in Judea, lives a beautiful young adolescent girl, named Mary. Her parents dream of marrying their daughter to the son of a rich merchant but Mary refuses. She prefers to be engaged to Joseph, the carpenter, who loves Mary scretely. Joseph is about thirty years old, but Mary does not care and since the Jewish tradition lets the woman choose freely her husband, her parents accept that she be engaged to Joseph. One evening, Mary is suddenly surrounded by a supernatural light and then she hears the reassuring voice of the Angel : "Do not fear Mary, for you have found favor with God. You shall conveive in your womb and give birth to a Son, you will name him Jesus. He will be Great because he is the Son of the Most High". Mary speaks the words of acceptation which will change her destiny.

About
"No film has ever been made about the woman Bernanos called "Mary, the mother of the Lord"... As for Saint Thomas de Villeneuve, he gave this disenchanted cry : "O, Evalgelists, why did you not set down what she did with her Son among men, how she lived with the Apostles ?" I heard this call. This film is my reply. I wished to fill the astonishing void of the Scriptures and return to Mary her dignity as a woman. Matthieu, Luke and John helped me in part but, for the rest, I had to imagine her in her everyday life. "The painter invents reality", Jean Cocteau used to say. I wanted the final film in my long career to be the pinnacle, just as a craftsman of the old days would make his masterpiece."
