In her teenage years, Louba meets Jeannie in a foster family where they have both been placed. Normally withdrawn and awkward, Louba begins to blossom in the French countryside, close beside Jeannie, her carefree, sensual friend. But Louba is haunted by her unknown past.
Her memories evoke the childhood of her parents, both of whom were Jewish and persecuted during the war; she is incapable of expressing her feelings and her need for love. It drives a wedge between the two girls and they break up.
20 years later in Paris, Louba lives by her wits… and by dipping her hand into others’ pockets. She bumps into Jeannie who doesn’t recognise her and takes her on to be a nanny for her son. Louba becomes too attached to the boy ignored by his own mother; he’s her path to love. But prey to confusion as to her identity, Louba can’t stop telling lies. Prisoner of the past or thief on parole, perhaps Louba will manage to at last find her niche and allow herself to live. Festival selections |
