Henry insists that the law must be applied to the letter everywhere, usually to his profit. Having just opened his law practice, he trolls for his first client in the halls of the courthouse. Etienne Chortin, a day-dreaming man of thirty or so, has been scraping by for years by selling rugs from door to door. Cécile no longer has any faith in Etienne, and she is on the point of leaving him for Raoul ( a loudmouth who represents the strong, protective man she feels she needs).
