Russia is the second non-French-speaking country, after Hungary, to release "Empire of the Wolves."
Offering it an ambitious launch in 128 theaters throughout the CIS, the film's Russian distributor Central Partnership has positioned the film as a big-budget production in the American vein (similar to "The Interpreter" starring Nicole Kidman).
The gamble appears to have paid off, since following its release July 28, the film jumped to the top of the box office on its opening weekend, attracting 75,000 spectators. "Empire of the Wolves" is the 22nd French-language film released in Russia this year, and, judging by its excellent launch, looks set to become one of the top three French performers of 2005, alongside "The Corsican File" and "13th District."
