On Monday 24 June, Unifrance launched a brand new French film & audiovisual market in South-East Asia, to be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, until Wednesday 26 June.
This market, organised with the support of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs' regional audiovisual cooperation in South-East Asia, aims to strengthen the presence of French films and programmes in the region as the economy recovers from the pandemic years.
This market brought together 9 French sales companies in Ho Chi Minh City: Balanga, France tv distribution, Goodfellas, Kinology, Loco Films, Newen Studios, Reel Suspects, Superights & The Party Film Sales.
Organised by the French Embassy in Vietnam, a one-day study of the country's cinema and VOD landscape gave French professionals the opportunity to meet companies such as distributor and exhibitor CGV Vietnam, the POPS Worldwide platform, distributor Skyline, exhibitor Beta Cinéma and distributor CJ HK Vietnam.
A welcome cocktail then brought together the French participants, the local industry and some twenty buyers from South-East Asia invited by Unifrance, coming from Cambodia, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
The operation continued with two days of professional meetings and sales at the Hôtel des Arts Saigon - MGallery, located in the heart of the city.
3 French films have been released in Vietnam since the start of the year, including The Taste of Things (CJ HK) with almost 40,000 admissions to date. French animation is particularly strong in this market, with over 120,000 admissions for The Jungle Bunch: World Tour and almost 100,000 for Argonuts in 2023, and over 136,000 for Chickenhare and the Hamster of Darkness in 2022.
