Justine Triet's film continues to make waves! After winning the Palme d'Or at the last Cannes Film Festival and numerous other awards worldwide, including two Golden Globes, it is now in the running for the Oscars, with five of the most prestigious nominations. But French cinema is also represented by documentaries and short films, in what promises to be an exceptional edition.
This is the first time since The Artist, in 2012, and Michael Haneke's Love in 2013, that a French film has received so many Oscar nominations. Michel Hazanavicius's film garnered a record 10, and went on to win five prestigious statuettes (including Best Picture and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin). Michael Haneke's film was also nominated five times, and won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, but under the Austrian banner.
Justine Triet's film, produced by Marie Ange Luciani (Les Films de Pierre) and David Thion (Les Films Pelléas) and sold internationally by mk2 films, garnered five of the most prestigious nominations for the 2024 edition of the ceremony organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences:
- Oscar for Best Picture
- Oscar for Best Director for Justine Triet
- Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Justine Triet and Arthur Harari
- Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sandra Hüller
- Oscar for Best Editing for Laurent Sénéchal
In fact, Justine Triet is this year's only woman nominated for the Best Director Oscar.
The Oscars promotion campaign was conducted throughout the autumn by American distributor Neon, which has been fully commited since the Cannes Film Festival.
On the documentary front, Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania, a majority-French production by Tanit Films (and sold by The Party Film Sales), earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature Film. It was released in the USA at the end of October under the Kino Lorber banner.
Among the great news from these nominations, we are delighted by the presence of two French short films in the running for the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film:
- Pachyderm by Stéphanie Clément (a TNZPV Productions and Folimage production)
- Letter to a Pig by Tal Kantor (a French/Israeli co-production by Miyu Productions for France and The Hive Studio for Israel).
Robot Dreams, by Pablo Berger, majority co-produced by France by Les films du Worso and Noodles Production, and sold by Elle Driver, has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.
The Taste of Things by Trần Anh Hùng, the French film nominated for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, was not selected among the five finalists, which did include the Italian entry The Captain by Matteo Garrone, a minority-French co-production by Pathé Films, which is also handling international sales.
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
