Portrait of a Lady on Fire has appealed to 100,000 spectators in South Korea, a score that no other French-language French film has attained since 2015, when The Bélier Family racked up 121,903 total admissions.
For the South Korean press, the film is the first "artbuster" of 2020. The film's career has been exceptionally stable through its first two weeks of release, up against massive local releases of the lunar new year, and should continue in a country that is extremely demanding when it comes to foreign films. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is jointly distributed in South Korea by Green Narae Media and Home Choice.
Céline Sciamma's film is currently enjoying excellent international visibility with almost 700,000 admissions already registered, 70,000 of which in The Netherlands, 85,000 in Germany, and 25,000 in Finland. The film benefited from a week-long release event in the USA, establishing the best launch per print for a French film since Amélie Poulain and Coco Before Chanel, before its distributor Neon takes it wide in February.
