UniFrance, the EFP (the agency promoting European films around the world), and the Miami Film Festival have signed an agreement to set up a French and European film market geared toward buyers from Latin America: the Miami Film Market - Mercado Del Cine Francés y Europeo.
The partnership was established during the Toronto International Film Festival between Sonja Heinen, managing director of the EFP, Jaie Laplante, executive director of the Miami Film Festival, and Gilles Renouard, acting executive director of UniFrance, and will be given concrete form with the first edition of the market in March 2020, during the next MIFF.
This market, made possible thanks to the support of the Europe Créative - MEDIA programme of the European Union, will take place from March 8 through 11, 2020. It is a continuation of the Mercado del Cine Francés, created by UniFrance in 2016, already in partnership with the Miami International Film Festival. This new version of the Mercado will henceforth be open to European films and will bring together 20 sales companies based in Europe and more than 30 Latin American buyers, for the presentation of 20 new films (10 French and 10 from other European countries), followed by the traditional individual meetings that are a core activity of film markets.
Gilles Renouard explains: "Three years ago, we offered an exciting opportunity to French film exporters and to Latin American distributors. This was the thinking behind a relatively modest project which became a unique event much appreciated by the film industry, be it by our members or by the many buyers from key territories who attended. We are now thrilled to include our friends at the EFP in this event."
