In February, a French title won over German audiences, while an animation continued its successful run on Polish screens and a comedy took the top spot at the Belgian box office.

During the month of February, French productions registered 3.81 million admissions outside France (taking €22.5 million), a figure that includes 1.55 million admissions (€9.6 million) garnered by majority-French films shot in French. While this score is lower than that of January (down 13%), it is higher than that of February 2018 (up 6.7%). Mia and the White Lion took over from Astérix: The Secret of the Magic Potion at the top of the charts, while the new (mis)adventures of the Verneuil family, Serial Bad Weddings 2, entered the Top 20 for the first time. Italy, which was the number 1 export market for French film in terms of attendance figures in 2018, is currently reinforcing its leading status, with 1.45 million tickets sold since January 1, followed by Poland (827,000 admissions) and Spain (771,000).
This month it was Mia and the White Lion's turn to lead the charts, boasting an additional 1.4 million admissions registered in international theaters in February (€7.43 million in box office receipts). The results of Gilles De Maistre's film were bolstered by excellent debuts in Germany and Poland: one month after its release in these two countries, it tallied, respectively, 402,000 and 346,000 admissions, and €2.8 million and €1.48 million in ticket sales. Mia and the White Lion thus stands out as the most popular French film outside France in 2019, counting a total of 2.43 million spectators in 25 markets around the world (€13 million in box office revenues), including 900,000 admissions in Italy (€5.62 million) and 264,000 in Colombia (€625,000). And the film's international run is far from over, with Mia soon to be released in countries such as Denmark, Spain, and Quebec.
Astérix: The Secret of the Magic Potion was the most successful French-language production in February. Even if it dropped back one place in the charts, it also managed to cross the 2 million spectators mark in foreign theaters! In this period, it enjoyed a promising debut in Quebec: programmed in 50 sites, it broke into the local Top 3 films on its opening weekend, raking in CAD$560,000 (equivalent to €375,000), with 59,000 admissions registered. 2.13 million spectators (representing €10.2 million) have already discovered the latest adventures of the diminutive Gallic hero in 25 foreign territories, with the best results recorded in Poland (372,000 admissions, for €1.56 million), Russia (349,000 admissions, for €1 million), and Spain (345,000 admissions, for €2 million). Asterix will soon arrive on screens in Germany and Italy.
Appearing for the first time in our monthly charts, Serial Bad Weddings 2 jumped straight to 3rd place. After four weeks, this comedy has attracted 335,000 moviegoers in six markets outside France, with Belgium generating 75% of attendance figures (255,000 spectators, for €1.83 million in receipts). It fought off competition to hit the top of the Belgian charts in its opening week, registering an impressive average of per-print ticket sales of €11,700 (1,600 admissions per print). One month after its launch, it is still showing in 60 Belgian theaters. As in Belgium, this comedy sequel by Philippe de Chauveron also achieved a stronger opening than the first installment in French-speaking Switzerland (57,000 spectators, for €752,000). In March, Serial Bad Weddings 2 will hit theaters in Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and Quebec.
