In addition to Paul Verhoeven's film Elle, which has been selected as France's submission in the Best Foreign-Language Film category at the Oscars, 16 other French co-productions (including majority-French productions) have been chosen as the official entry from their country of linguistic origin.
Sixteen French co-productions (not including Paul Verhoeven's film) feature among the 85 films officially submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
- Austria: Stefan Zweig, Farewell to Europe by Maria Schrader (minority-French co-production)
- Bosnia and Herzegovina: Death in Sarajevo by Danis Tanovic (majority-French co-production)
- Canada: It's Only the End of the World de Xavier Dolan (minority co-production)
- Chile: Neruda by Pablo Larraín (minority co-production)
- Cuba: El Acompañante by Pavel Giroud (minority co-production)
- Colombia: Alias Maria by José Luis Rugeles (minority co-production)
- Egypt: Clash by Mohamed Diab (minority co-production)
- Iran: The Salesman by Asghar Farhadi (majority co-production)
- Italy: Fire at Sea by Gianfranco Rosi (minority co-production)
- Jordan: 3000 Nights by Mai Masri (minority co-production)
- Mexico: Desierto by Alfonso Cuarón (minority co-production)
- Nepal: The Black Hen by Min Bahadur Bham (minority co-production)
- Romania: Sieranevada by Cristi Puiu (minority co-production)
- Singapore: Apprentice by Boo Junfeng (minority co-production)
- Switzerland: My Life as a Courgette by Claude Barras (minority co-production)
- Yemen: I Am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced by Khadija Al-Salami (minority co-production)
A list of nine finalists will be announced in December, after which the five official nominees will be revealed on January 24th, in the lead-up to the 89th Academy Awards ceremony to be held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on February 26, 2017.
