Synopsis
On 6 August 1945, three B-29s took off from the island of Tinian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The bomber Enola Gay carried Little Boy, an atomic bomb with a yield of 15,000 tonnes of TNT, in its hold. About six hours after take-off, the bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. The explosion was enormous. A monstrous blast devastated the city. Ninety per cent of homes were damaged or destroyed. In a matter of seconds, 80,000 people perished in the atomic inferno. Three days later, nuclear fire rained down on the city of Nagasaki. Tens of thousands of Japanese were wiped out. On 15 August 1945, Emperor Hirohito finally announced that Japan would lay down its arms. Originally, the bomb was not intended for Japan, but for Germany.
