Synopsis
February 24, 2022. As Russian tanks roll into Ukraine and bombs rain down on cities, no one seems to notice that Ukrainian farms and agricultural infrastructure are also being systematically destroyed. In the occupied territories, expropriations are on the rise, as is the looting of crops. Having failed to take Kyiv, in the spring of 2022 the invader set out to conquer the famous “black earth” regions in the east and south of the country, which are among the most fertile in the world. Another priority for the Kremlin is to rush to the coast to prevent Ukrainian grain from being exported via the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, through which Ukraine transports 90% of its export production.
