At the end of the 19th century, black gold is about to transform the town of Fort River into a new El Dorado.
As the first wealthy businessman who arrived in the place, Mr. Trevis, as venal as he is unscrupulous, intends to become the area's sole operator. To achieve his aims, he gets his son John, his "muscle", to convince the farmers to hand over their land which harbors rich oil deposits.
Mike was once a simple farmer. But since his wife was killed, he has become a bounty hunter. His work leads him to join the group of cowboys put together by John.
Jack McCandle is attached to the land he inherited from his father, the first member of the McCandle family to touch American soil. He has therefore refused the continual offers proposed by Trevis.
But Trevis, blinded by his thirst for riches, is ready to do anything to get what he wants.
