Laurent is invited to a dinner where he meets Fabienne, a beautiful, lively and intelligent woman old enough to be his mother. She's a journalist responsible for the local edition of an important newspaper. Love is a whole new thing. He becomes obsessed with meeting Fabienne again, feeling her body close to him, her warmth, joy. He learns to laugh, let loose. It's like being born again. But every moment devoted to Fabienne is time he doesn't spend on his other plans. And every bending of the rules is a betrayal. Laurent's emotional upheaval upsets everyone: so much for the glories after his transfer to the Nantes football team, as for his buddies… Torn between contradictory demands, he experiences love like some disease for which he has no cure. Because, for those who aren't ready to accept it, love can be big trouble.

About
I had just finished writing the film when I came across a sentence in a Julien Green novel that hit me like a hammer: “In the eyes of those who aren’t made to receive it, love is primarily a considerable disturbance.” In a strangely condensed way, it seemed to sum up exactly what I’d been writing about, i.e. the story of a passion that hits two people who don’t have much talent for love, and the “considerable disturbance” that ensues in their lives. The choice is open: it can play as a drama or a comedy, or as drama and comedy rolled into one – I’ve never really been able to tell them apart.
