Marek the Pole and Mimmo the Italian have been coal miners here in Lorraine, on the German border, since they were sixteen. I feel close to Mimmo in many ways. We both come from Sardinian families and walk with our head in the stars. We both value honesty and loyalty in friendship. Compared with me, Mimmo is more naive. When he meets this kind of shady mobster, Jaeger, he lets himself be charmed and lured and manipulated. Jaeger represents “elsewhere”, “the unknown”, a way to escape from his life as a miner. He tries to make the break but quickly sees his mistake. His place is next to his friend, who has chosen to stand and fight. (Bruno Putzulu - “Le Figaro”, November 27th 1998)
