Synopsis
Jean's three loves, by the river's edge : a teenage girl's secret, the red dress of a dazzlingly beautiful woman, the silences of a chambermaid. As a child he confronts the father of a teenager girl he is smitten by in exchange for the secret she promises to reveal. As an adult he prefers to flee from the beautiful woman who is enamoured of him. As an old man, he musters his remaining strenght in the pursuit of the young woman he did not dare love. Each time, the same fear, the same desire : to take the plunge...

About
"With "Still Waters Run Deep" I learnt what it means to make a film around, on and even under water. And why it took five weeks to shoot a country scene which was supposed to have taken only two hours ! Despite having studied the previous years' meteorological patterns, there's always a surprise in store : nothing is more fickle than the weather. Sunshine, then rain and after the rain, more sun, only in the meantime the river has swollen to drown the sets and sweep away the gangways... Grass which withers and has to be resown blade by blade. The shooting of this first feature which explores three regions, three seasons, three epochs was as exhilarating as it was epic. It was an experience which gave me the courage to undertake whatever may lie ahead of me. Jacques Deschamps, is a demanding, meticulous director, he leaves nothing to chance. He is a singular talent which I want to pursue. Today, this film continues its career abroad. It has been sold in five or six countries including Belgium, Russia and Italy where it will go on release at the end of 1997."
