Synopsis
Paris, September 1958. Irene is a devoted and fervent Communist activist. Her husband Bernard, who sells shoes, is not. Irene's political activity within the Party make her an independent woman. Which inevitably sparks jelousy in Bernard, as well as admiration. They love each other, but political activism and family life don't always go together. They have one son, Leon, and also share the house with Charlot, Irene's uncle. The year 1958 is a turning point for Irene and her family. Bernard's shoes store goes bankrupt and he becomes a delivary man for a department store. Meanwhile, Charles De Gaulle has returned to the political stage with a new constitution for France, which is submitted to a national referendum. Irene makes the issue a personal affair, and she and her comrades campaign vigorously for a "No" vote. Yet another event will dsirupt the family's life : the Red Army Choir comes to Paris, bringing with it the soloist Ivan, who has a fateful encounter with Irene...
