Biography

Marie Vermillard studied architecture in Clermont-Ferrand and then headed for the film scene in Paris where she began working as a continuity person. She worked on numerous French features such as Eric Rochant's "A World Without Pity" and "Aux yeux du monde," Arnaud Desplechin's "The Sentinel," as well as Cédric Klapisch's "Little Nothings" and "Péril Jeune." She also collaborated on Klapisch's "When the Cat's Away" and was Second-Unit director on the film by Bartabas, "Chamane." At the same time, she directed two short films that drew attention at festivals: "Reste" (1992) and "Quelqu'un" (1995). "Eau douce" (1997), begun as a short film, soon extended beyond the standard running time and became a film of around 60 minutes that gained theatrical release in conjunction with "Quelqu'un." After "Chantal," an interlude co-directed with Zaïda Ghorab-Volta, Vermillard completed her first true feature film, "Lila Lili," in 1998.
