Complete filmography
BiographyAfter studying Law in Rome, Ettore Scola started out working as a journalist. He began his career in the movies as a screenwriter. He wrote some fifty screenplays, very often in collaboration with Dino Risi or Antonio Pietrangeli, before moving into directing in 1964 with "Let’s Talk About Women." He first achieved international recognition in 1974 with "We All Loved Each Other So Much," a film that is at once humorous and touching. He went on to make a name for himself in the Italian comedy genre, focusing on social issues such as poverty-stricken slums in "Ugly, Dirty and Bad" (aka "Down and Dirty"), which won him the Best Screenplay award at Cannes in 1975, and navel-gazing intellectuals in "The Terrace" (1979). With "The Great Day" (aka "A Special Day") (1977), which boasted an impressive duo played by Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren and was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category, as well as "Ballando Ballando" (1983), which won three Cesar awards, Ettore Scola gradually moved away from the traditional Italian comedy style, bearing witness to the international reach of his work. |
