BiographyBorn on January 26th 1926 in Alexandria, Youssef Chahine had a traditional schooling. Yet his real interest was in theatre. He managed to leave for the USA, to the Pasadena Play House, near Los Angeles, where he spent two years studying cinema and dramatic arts. At the age of 23 he made his first film ''Baba Amine'' in 1949. In 1951, he participated at Cannes for the first time with ''Son of the Nile''. In 1970, he received the Grand Prix (Golden Tanit award) at the Carthage Festival for his oeuvre. In 1972, he made a first time Egyptian/Algerian co- production ''The Sparrow''. In 1979, he obtained a Silver Bear and Jury Grand Prix at Berlin for ''Alexandrie pourquoi'', the first instalment of what was to be an autobiographical trilogy, completed by ''La mémoire'' (1982) and ''Alexandrie encore et toujours''(1990). In 1992, he staged Albert Camus' ''Caligula'' at the Comédie Française, which was a huge success. In the same year he began writing ''The Emigré'' a story inspired by the biblical tale of Joseph, son of Jacob, a project which he'd nurtured since the fifties, and which he com- pleted in 1994. In 1997, 46 years and 5 official selections later, the Fiftieth Anniversary Cannes Festival presented his 33rd feature, ''Le destin''. | Related links |
