UniFrance Films Box Office Report: Taken 2 soars to new heights
Taken 2 has descended on some forty territories across the globe in a single weekend, boasting a spectacular 13.9 million admissions. These are staggering results for this sequel, including an impressive score in the USA (Fox), where it has hit the top of the box office and is credited with the all-time best opening for a French film, taking $49.5 million in 3 days (6.2 million spectators). It has also topped the charts in other English-speaking markets, registering 1.2 million admissions in the UK (Fox) and 630,000 in Australia (Fox).
As for Asian markets, it charmed 410,000 spectators on its opening day in China (China Film Corp.) and posted an exceptional opening week in the Philippines (Fox – 450,000 admissions), as well as Malaysia (Fox – 310,000 admissions), Taiwan (Fox – 260,000 admissions), Singapore (Fox – 185,000 admissions), and Thailand (Fox - 157,000 admissions). In South Korea (Fox), where it was released one week prior to the rest of the world, it attracted 1.3 million moviegoers in its opening week, with over 2 million admissions registered in 10 days.
Latin American audiences also flocked to theaters, with 330,000 admissions posted in Mexico (Fox), 212,000 in Brazil (Fox), and 156,000 in Argentina (Fox).
The first episode ended its international run with a total of 31.8 million admissions registered around the world. Judging by the second installment's initial results, Taken 2 could well top the 30 million spectators mark abroad. Taken 2 currently totals 13.7 million admissions abroad.
The Intouchables has enjoyed a 23% rise in attendance figures in the UK (Entertainment Film Distributors) against last week, bringing in an additional 79,000 admissions. The film now posts a running total of 162,000 admissions in the UK, which is higher than the most successful French film of 2011, Potiche (StudioCanal Ltd.), which pulled in 155,000 admissions.
Admissions to The Intouchables in Japan (Gaga) have also increased in its 6th week (+7%), despite the film dropping back from 6th to 10th place. It currently tallies close to 780,000 admissions in Japan, and hopes are high that it will cross the million spectators threshold before the end of the month, thus matching the performance of previous hits Amelie (NewSelect) and The Crimson Rivers (Gaga). At this stage, The Intouchables has registered 25.8 million admissions abroad.
